The science behind skin care has seen marked improvements in just the past few years alone. Growth factors are proteins made in our bodies to regulate how and when cells reproduce. As we age, these growth factors may not work as quickly. With fewer skin cells, skin is not as flexible and as elastic, which not only results in lines and wrinkles, but also slows healing of scars.

Each type of cell may have a different set of growth factors based on specific proteins. For example, growth factors for brain cells are not the same as for cells of our skin, nor should they be. Cells are “differentiated” in that they specialize in certain biological functions. Indeed, the growth factors in dermal cells help us maintain thicker and more elastic skin — especially by stimulating collagen production — but those attributes may be completely irrelevant in nerve cells where growth factors play a different role.
